The Block recap: Kitchen Room Reveal

Cooking Up Fresh Ideas in the Kitchen

Kitchen week is always one of the most challenging on the Block, as this is traditionally the room that sells apartments. So how did the Blockheads rise to the challenge?

After their disappointment last week, the twins bounced back with a vengeance – and a room win for their kitchen. Described by their sometime nemesis Shaynna as a ‘chef’s kitchen’, we loved the functionality of the space. The clustered lighting over the timber breakfast bar is right on trend and creates an instant wow factor (check out our industrial style Lab Pendant range for a similar look) although with such high ceilings, we did wonder whether these would have been better placed over the actual work bench area where task lighting is extremely important. Visit our pendants lifestyle gallery for more inspiration.

This kitchen really wowed us, and Kara and Kyal obviously have a real understanding of the importance of layered lighting in such a multi-functional space. Our LED ribbon lighting not only showcased their most stunning feature – the glass topped brick splashback – but also provided light over the cooktop. Our LED dimmable downlights were pared with a feature pendant light - similar to our Manor 450mm Metal Shade in White or  Espresso 1 Light Pendant in Dark Coffee/Gold over the food preparation area. Combining task and ambient lighting is a must in today’s modern kitchens.

Brad & Dale

While Brad & Dale were happy with their kitchen, they certainly weren’t happy with the judges feedback. While their initial impression was good, upon closer inspection the judges were at their nit-picking best. They were especially critical of the lighting, which was described as cold and uninviting. While we applaud their use of layered lighting (pendants, downlights and ribbon lights) they did overdo it somewhat. LED lighting under cabinets is a beautiful feature, but as the judges pointed out, it needs to be done with some restraint. The white on white theme could have easily been softened with the addition of our Stockholm 1 Light Tall Flair Pendants in Natural Wood to complement their timber cabinetry. With Brad & Dale sticking to their design guns, we look forward to their next room reveal!

Cooking up even more quirky design ideas, Chantelle & Steve impressed the judges with their modern interpretation of the country kitchen. Both Darren and Neale loved our light fittings – the Manor Decorative Cage in aged steel and Manor Barn Metal Shade over the workspaces. Light fittings with exposed bulbs are key features in any industrial styling, and the Manor range lets you customise your design by mixing and matching combinations of metal or glass shades with different metal cages. Finished with an energy efficient old style Karbon globe, it’s the perfect look for refined industrial style.
